Kumanan Rasanathan, a public health physician with over twenty years’ experience in health and related sectors, currently works as Unit Head, Equity and Health at WHO Headquarters in Geneva, where he leads WHO’s global efforts on social determinants of health to reduce health inequities. Until February 2021, he was Coordinator, Health Systems at WHO in Phnom Penh, Cambodia where he led the team on health systems and maternal and child health. He also served as Incident Manager for COVID-19 response and Acting WHO Representative. Prior to working in Cambodia, he was Chief, Implementation Research and Delivery Science Unit and Senior Adviser Health for UNICEF in New York, where he led work on implementation research and policy for essential child health services, universal health coverage, (district) health system strengthening, health systems resilience post-Ebola, integrated community case management, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda, and multisectoral approaches to child health. Kumanan previously worked at WHO in Geneva from 2007-2012 on primary health care and the social determinants of health. Prior to this, Kumanan worked in a number of different countries as a clinician, researcher, policymaker, programme manager and advocate. He started his public health career running Phase I and II vaccine clinical trials in New Zealand. Through his career, he has provided technical and policy support to public health programmes in over 25 countries
